The reduced motor winding stress is a result of the three-level switching multi-step voltage waveforms, which are one-half of a traditional two-level switching VSD. The reduced voltage steps, and lower line-to-line voltage decrease the non-uniform voltage distribution among motor winding turns reducing stress in the insulation material. The reduced voltage steps also significantly reduce motor shaft voltages and bearing currents which allow larger motors to be used with standard bearings.
Figure 1 below shows a comparison between three- level and two-level voltage waveforms, with the three-level producing a significantly improved sinusoidal curve (waveform).
SMEC’s custom in-house designed and built enclosures house the 1000V Three-Level VSDs. Enclosures are built specifically for harsh conditions and high ambient temperatures typical in underground mining and tunneling environments.
Standard 1000V VSD Enclosures include an inline reactor and DC Bus chokes for harmonic mitigation.
Local and remote control of the 1000V VSD panels is via an HMI unit. The HMI unit additionally provides local and remote access to the VSD control firmware, allowing VSD control parameters to be monitored remotely.
